The decision by government to forestall court action on the Marlborough Sounds case by passing legislation that clarified Crown ownership of the foreshore and seabed led to widespread protest by Māori. In April and May 2004 there was a hīkoi (protest march) of Māori from many parts of the country to Wellington, where they gathered in Parliament grounds.
