Stone walls, Auckland Harbour

Ivan Lavas, from a family of stonemasons, emigrated to New Zealand from the Adriatic island of Korčula. In 1927 he established Auckland Stonemasons Ltd. His first big job was to build sea walls around Tamaki Drive, Auckland. Since then he worked on many projects involving stone works around Auckland. Large boulders (rip rap) have been dumped in front of the sea wall in recent years to provide additional protection against coastal erosion.
