This diagram shows the geothermal plumbing system beneath Geyser Flat at Whakarewarewa. A column of hot water rises to the surface, erupting through a number of vents. The geysers (Prince of Wales Feathers and Pōhutu) have narrow vents, which allow pressure and temperature to build up until the water starts to erupt explosively.
