Mt Taranaki is iconic in New Zealand. In one tradition the mountain, along with others, was said to have desired the wives of Tongariro, Pīhanga and Ngāuruhoe. After losing a mighty battle, Taranaki travelled across to the west of the North Island, where he now stands.
