The late Mrs Guy Williams, one of the union's outstanding figures, won the stroke championship seven times and the match-play championship six times. She was an administrator for many years, a life vice-president, and patroness. Her great interest was responsible for much of the early development of the union. Mrs G. W. Hollis (née Olive, Kay) held the stroke-play championship from 1926 to 1935 and again in 1946, 10 times in all. She won the Australian championships in 1933 and 1936, and still holds the course record for the Victoria Course, Melbourne.

The first Commonwealth Tournament was held in Great Britain in 1959. Teams went from Australia, Canada, South Africa, and New Zealand, the winner being Britain. The next match was held in Australia in 1963, the winner again being Britain. The New Zealand Foursome Match-play Championship was first played in 1960 and is now an annual event.
The union is managed by an executive council of 13, each representing a district into which the North and South Islands are divided. Each district elects its own council member. There are at present 12 district associations, and each works with its executive member and helps in the running of district affairs. The chairman of the union, or business head, is appointed by the executive; while the president, or social head, is elected at the annual meeting of the union and is nominated by the executive council. A patroness is also elected at the annual meeting. A central committee is appointed each year and consists of the chairman and three members of the council. The committee does such work as the council directs and deals with urgent matters. A selection committee is appointed when needed.
Organised women's golf matches were first played in New Zealand in 1893, when a match-play championship was established. This championship, and a cup donated by the late Mrs G. G. Stead, have been competed for each year, except during the two wars. Until 1905 women's championship meetings were held under the auspices of the men's association. In 1905 it was decided at a meeting in Napier that the Auckland, Napier, Manawatu, Wanganui, Wairarapa, Hutt-Wellington, Christchurch, Timaru, North Otago, and Otago clubs should affiliate with the British Women's Golf Union. Further autonomy came in 1910 when a meeting in Christchurch decided to form a separate branch of the union in New Zealand. The New Zealand union is still affiliated with the British union and carries out its general policy. There are now 308 clubs and about 19,000 members in the New Zealand union.
