The development of irrigation in Canterbury was led by the government, particularly in the early 20th century. The construction of irrigation channels to lead water from the Rangitātā diversion race across the Canterbury Plains to farms was an essential part of irrigation development. This channel is at Mayfield, north-west of Ashburton.
