Anton Sudiharto was born in Central Java, Indonesia, where he learnt the art of batik – an Indonesian method of dying cloth and using wax to create patterns. In the mid-1970s he moved to Bali to set up a gallery and studio, and in 1979 he came to live in New Zealand. This photograph was taken in Wellington the following year, at an exhibition of his work.
