Story: Ngā haki – Māori and flags

Papawai marae, 1897

Papawai marae, 1897

At the opening of the meeting house at Papawai marae, near Greytown, in 1897, the Union Jack is being waved. The four official flags raised at Papawai were the Treaty of Waitangi flag (probably the United Tribes flag), Rongopai, Māui (a flag with the demigod Māui standing with one foot on the North Island and the other on the South Island), and the flag of local prophet Pāora Pōtangaroa.
