Michele Henry, co-owner of Roses Florists in Mt Eden, Auckland, was one of the many New Zealand workers who were self-employed in 2006. As well as contributing her labour to the enterprise, Henry had savings invested in it, and took the risk if that capital did not make a satisfactory return. Returns to the self-employed have followed historic trends very similar to returns to wage-earners.
