This graph shows the annual cost of floods over the period from 1976 to 2004, based on insurance payment data provided by the Insurance Council of New Zealand. Amounts are in New Zealand dollars, adjusted to 2004 values. Yearly costs varied greatly – more than $100 million was paid out in 1984 and 2004, but there were no costs in some years. Damaging floods occurred in varying locations, and during these three decades most parts of the country were affected.
