Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated is an important tribal body with social, economic and cultural programmes. It sponsors a major annual event on Waitangi Day (6 February), held at the Clive Domain, between Napier and Hastings. The event is organised by the Māori Millenium Committee and Ngā Tukemata O Kahungunu Trust. As part of the occasion this canoe is brought to the Clive for rides. The canoe, called Ngā Tukemata o Kahungunu (the eyebrows of Kahungunu), was completed in 1996. It is a fully carved waka taua (war canoe), 20 metres in length and licensed to carry 36 paddlers. It is privately owned and administered by the Ngā Tukemata o Kahungunu Trust. This photo was taken on Waitangi Day 2004.
