Organic soils are wet throughout the year because they are usually in low-lying sites and have a continually high water table. Gley soils are not quite as wet as organic soils, as the water table drops in summer and allows them to dry. Both need drainage before they can be used for farming. The characteristics of allophanic and pumice soils are dominated by the types of volcanic material from which they were formed. Both are free-draining, and provide productive pasture once nutrient deficiencies have been corrected.
