Home–school partnership

Programmes have been set up to encourage Tongan and other Pacific parents to teach their children in their own language at home. Kavanagh College in Dunedin has set up workshops for Pacific parents for this purpose. Here parents Talia Moatanne (right) of Tonga and Maggie Latulipe from Samoa, talk about their teaching role to Steve Read, assistant principal of Kavanagh College. Talia had eight children ranging in age from three to 17.
