Indicative referendums on the electoral system were held in 1992 and 2011. In the 1992 referendum, 84.7% of those who voted wanted a change from the existing first-past-the-post (FPP) system. Of the options available should the system change, 70.5% of those who voted favoured the mixed-member proportional (MMP) system. In the 2011 indicative election, 57.8% of those who voted favoured retaining the existing MMP system. Of the alternative electoral systems to MMP, 46.7% of those who voted preferred FPP.
