Kōrero: Love and romance

Māhinaarangi, Tūrongo and Raukawa

Māhinaarangi, Tūrongo and Raukawa

Māhinaarangi holds her baby Raukawa, flanked by her father, Te Angiangi, and her husband, Tūrongo, in this drawing for a contemporary children's book. Māhinaarangi was the active partner in a night-time courtship which dispelled Tūrongo's sorrow after the loss of his wife Ruapūtahanga. The baby, Raukawa, is an ancestor of the Māori king. The romantic story about the enticing smell of Māhinaarangi's perfume made of raukawa leaves is also an account of the origins of a key ancestral line.
