Jean Ashby measures the distance between the jack and the surrounding bowls to determine which is closest to the jack. A team scores as many points on each 'end' as it has bowls closer to the jack than the other team. Jean became a Bowls New Zealand Life Member in 2002 and has been awarded a ONZM (Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit) for services to bowling.
