Copper tussock Chionochloa rubra cuprea grassland dominates this view south-west across the Manorburn uplands of Central Otago, at an altitude of 700–900 metres. The Old Man Range, which rises to around 1,600 metres, west of the Clutha River, can be seen in the distance. Grasslands harbour diverse insect communities. One recently-discovered wingless species of stonefly (Nesoperla patricki) lives its entire life within the clumps of copper tussocks on Dunedin’s Swampy Summit.
