Samuel Marsden established a mission farm at Waimate North to supply food for settlers, and as an example of peaceful, constructive industry to Māori. This 1845 engraving of the mission shows sheep and cattle in well-fenced paddocks. The land was also cultivated to grow cereals, vegetables and fruit.
