The 2013 film Mr Pip was based on a novel of the same name by prominent New Zealand writer Lloyd Jones and was directed by expatriate New Zealander Andrew Adamson, yet there was virtually nothing that was associated with New Zealand in the film. The location was Bougainville and the plot concerned an English teacher who read to his pupils extracts from Great expectations, by Victorian English novelist Charles Dickens. The film was a good example of the increasingly international context for much New Zealand creative work in the 2000s.
