Girls learned to sew at school as well as at home. This is young Gladys Thompson’s needlework exercise book for 1906, when she was in Standard 6 (Year 8). It contains a miniature apron which demonstrates gathering, a waistband and hemming; a placket (the opening at the top of a skirt); careful patching which matches the printed fabric; appliqué and embroidered running stitch and blanket stitch.
