Zoom in to see details of this page from the 5 December 1912 issue of the Auckland Weekly News, showing scenes from the tangihanga for King Mahuta. He died suddenly, aged about 58, as he and his family were about to move in to a new and specially built house at his pā at Waahi, Huntly. About 10,000 followers attended the tangi. One of them, MP Māui Pōmare, in a traditional farewell oration, said, 'The stars of the heavens grow fewer. The ridgepole of the house is broken asunder. The whare leaks. The children shiver with cold. The father has gone. The tribe is left desolate.'
