This work, whose title means ‘The knowledge and traditional history of the Ngāti Awa and Te Āti Awa people’, records the shared histories of the two tribes. It was prepared by students of Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiarangi. The carved figure in the middle represents Toitehuatahi (Toi) – likened to Professor Raumati Gary Hook, the chief executive of the whare wānanga – fishing up a degree. On the left is Awanuiarangi I, an important ancestor of both tribes. The carving on the right is of Toroa, captain of the Mataatua canoe, and Awanuiarangi II, the great-grandson of Toroa, and Ngāti Awa’s founding ancestor.
