Albatrosses often have to travel far from their colony to find food, especially in a poor season. The sight of other birds feeding is a signal that food is around, so large numbers of birds tend to congregate. Fishing boats can be a mixed blessing – discarded offal provides food, but birds can get caught on longline hooks or in trawl nets.
