Walters, whose first name has not been recorded, was photographed around 1900 while employed as a gardener at The Gums, in Taita (in the Hutt Valley). Thomas Mason, who owned The Gums, prided himself on the huge number and variety of plants in his more than 12-acre garden, which was considered the finest in New Zealand in the 1890s.
