This map of Catholic secondary schools open in 2011 shows their broad spread across New Zealand. When setting up its school network, the Catholic Church aimed to have a school serving every parish in the country. The network of primary schools came close to achieving this, and the secondary network (shown here) covered all the cities and many towns. Rich, middling and poor children were all to be included. The students at most long-established private schools came from well-to-do families, but at some Catholic schools, many of the students came from families with little money to spare.
