Bing Lucas travelled around North American national parks in 1969 and returned home full of ideas about how American practices could be applied in New Zealand. He outlined his recommendations in his booklet Conserving New Zealand’s heritage (1970), which provided a road map for his activities as director of national parks over the next five years.
