A light rail system was introduced at Lake Grassmere in the 1950s to transport harvested salt to the washery and stockpile. Also trialled were large dump trucks fitted with aircraft tyres (so they did not break through the thin salt crust). In 1963 the rail system was replaced by trucks with normal tyres that drove along roads to the washery.
