In the Māori world view, all things were linked by whakapapa (genealogies). This whakapapa shows the links between the various trees and the god Tāne. Tāne, a child of Ranginui (the sky) and Papatūānuku (the earth), created the first woman. This is an updated version of information in Johannes C. Andersen’s Maori life in Ao-tea (1922).
