Prime Minister Robert Muldoon addresses a crowd at the Wellington Town Hall in 1981. He was a seasoned politician and had been an outstandingly successful campaigner – the Holyoake government's 1969 win, for example, was credited to Muldoon – but 1981 would be the last time the magic worked.
