Kōrero: Biculturalism

Manutahi School, Ruatōria area, 1947

In 1947, when this newsreel was made, New Zealand society was overwhelmingly monocultural. Māori culture was confined mainly to very small and remote rural communities such as Ruatōria, on the East Coast. This film shows a small but important exception to the dominance of non-Māori culture in mid-20th-century New Zealand.
