Another well-known Silver Ferns captain who played both goal keep and goal defence was Bernice Mene, who was selected for the Silver Ferns in 1992 when she was only 17, and led the team between 1997 and 2002. During this time she was regarded as the world's best defensive player. While playing for the Silver Ferns, Mene was also captain of the New Zealand Under-21 team and the Southern Sting. Here, she attempts to block an Australian shot in the world championship final in Christchurch in 1999.
