Eric Brady, an 85-year-old Second World War veteran, received serious facial injuries in an attack in February 2009. Brady was viciously beaten by Maurangi Pere in the car park of the Papatoetoe RSA club in Auckland. Brady had just entered his car when the teenager attacked him while attempting to steal the vehicle. The assault was captured on closed-circuit television before Pere abandoned the theft because he could not disconnect the car's immobiliser. Pere was later found guilty of assaulting Brady and drawing a knife on 68-year-old Limaono Kingi while stealing his car. He was sentenced to eight years and 10 months' imprisonment for both assaults. Titanium plates were used to reconstruct Brady's face.
