Maunga Tapu

I te hui rongonui i Pūkawa i te tau 1856 ka whakaaetia ko Pōtatau hei Kīngi Māori.  I reira ko tētehi kawa hei whakawhiti i ō rātou mana ki runga ki a ia.  Ka hui rātou ki tētehi pou kara teitei rawa, me ētehi taura tārewa iho.  Nā Iwikau Te Heuheu, te Arikinui o Ngāti Tūwharetoa, nāna te hui nei i karanga, nāna rā ano hoki te whakamārama ko te pou kara nei, ko ia ko tōna maunga ko Tongariro.  Ko ngā taura tāwēwē ko ngā taura whiri ki ngā maunga tapu o ngā iwi i hui mai.
