Tongans in New Zealand, 1961–2013

This graph shows the increase in New Zealand’s Tongan-born population as immigrants entered in the 1970s and 1980s. In contrast, from the 1990s the community’s major growth was through the New Zealand-born children and grandchildren of those earlier arrivals. By 2013 the New Zealand-born formed a significant majority of the Tongan community. Figures for ethnicity are only available from 1991.
