Adult black pine bark beetles are about 4–5 millimetres long and are found throughout New Zealand. They feed on the inner bark of recently felled logs and form brood galleries, in which about 100 eggs are laid. These adult beetles are feeding: the reddish patch to the right is damage caused by beetle activity; the wood on the left is still undamaged.
