By 2001 the proportion of New Zealand residents with only European blood had dropped to 70%. The recent migrants from Asia, Africa and the Middle East tended to be more affluent than many immigrants of previous years. Their presence was obvious in New Zealand’s big cities, as this 2004 scene in Auckland suggests.
