Skateboarding became big in New Zealand in the mid-1970s. Children and teenagers skated on any surface that was remotely suitable. Skateboarding was not only a recreational and sporting pursuit but a demonstration of rebellious freedom, as skaters rode on and in places originally intended for quite different purposes. In the late 1970s Auckland skaters including Elroy Ainsley, Peter Boronski, Grant MacCredie, Allan Offsoski, Victor Viskovich and Eddie Wesseling spent a summer skateboarding a dam in the Hūnua Ranges, south of Auckland, before being seen off by dam authorities.
