Military camp, Waitara, 1860

Pressure from settlers to acquire Māori land, and Māori resistance to selling their land, erupted into war at Waitara, Taranaki, in 1860. British troops built the military camp shown in this watercolour painting. Later fighting spread to Waikato, the East Coast and elsewhere.
