Rangiatea Church with Octavius Hadfield in the pulpit, from a sketch by Charles Decimus Barraud

The crowning glory of Octavius Hadfield's Church of England mission at Otaki was Rangiatea Church, built in 1849 by Maori converts under the direction of Tamihana Te Rauparaha. This interior view exaggerates the height of its supporting pillars, which were nevertheless impressively tall.
