After becoming one of the first Māori women to qualify as a nurse and midwife, in 1908, Ākenehi Hei was appointed district nurse to Māori communities in Northland, Rotorua, Taranaki and Whanganui. She is pictured outside her ‘tent hospital’ in 1909 or 1910.
