Before 1991, births data are based on births registered in New Zealand to mothers resident in New Zealand and mothers visiting from overseas
by date of registration. Until June 2006, nuptiality was determined by the date of marriage given on the birth registration form. If no date of
marriage was given, the birth was assumed to be ex-nuptial. From 1 July 2006, nuptiality was determined by a new question on the birth
registration form which allows marriages, civil unions, and de facto relationships to be recorded.
