Story: Violent crime

Malcolm Rewa, serial rapist

Malcolm Rewa arrives at the Auckland High Court for his trial early in 1998. He admitted to 13 rapes of six women, but denied 29 other charges of rape and attempted rape. After three months of evidence, the jury found Rewa guilty of raping a further 17 women. Rewa targeted young, attractive women who lived alone. His last victim was a 15-year-old girl who fought back and sustained severe head injuries. Her father noted the registration of her attacker's car, and this led to Rewa's arrest. Blood from a police dog bite on his arrest linked Rewa to a large number of recorded rapes.
