Distinguished natural scientist Charles Fleming took this photo of his five fellow coast-watchers after a snowstorm on Auckland Island on 15 July 1942. In February Fleming had begun a year-long stint with 'Cape Expedition', the code name for the coast-watchers. This group, who were the second lot to be sent south, were based at Carnley Harbour. There were other coast-watchers at Port Ross, also on Auckland Island, and at Perseverance Harbour on Campbell Island. In addition to his coast-watching duties Fleming studied the geology and natural history of the island. The fact that the group was all-male may explain why their creation took female form.
