In the Second World War, as in the First, New Zealand soldiers served with Australians, this time in Greece, Crete and North Africa. However when Japan entered the war and began to advance through South-East Asia and the Pacific, the Australians chose to bring their troops home, while the New Zealanders decided to leave theirs in Europe, where they distinguished themselves in the Italian campaign.
