Story: City planning

Garden-city housing

Garden-city housing

Squalid conditions in Britain’s industrial cities gave rise to the garden-city movement at the end of the 19th century. It called for the construction of garden cities where city workers would benefit from the country air and suburban lifestyles. The first garden city was built at Letchworth outside London in 1903. Its construction inspired town planning advocates the world over. This image shows the English cottage-style housing and park-like surrounds that characterised the settlement.
