Workers search visitors’ bags and equipment at the quarantine facility on Codfish Island, in 2005. Codfish Island, a nature reserve, is the main habitat of the endangered flightless parrot, the kākāpō. Specially protected areas, along with nature and scientific reserves, often have access restrictions and permit systems to keep out unwanted plants and animals.
