Population changes in Christchurch, 2006 and 2013

This table highlights some of the dramatic changes of residence that followed the major earthquake of 22 February 2011. The five area units at the top of the table are to the west of the city. This region was slightly affected by the September 2010 Darfield earthquake but avoided major damage in the February 2011 Christchurch quake – so many refugees moved there, leaving behind badly damaged or condemned houses in the eastern part of the city. The bottom five area units are from those severely affected eastern suburbs, where the population decline between 2006 and 2013 is striking.
