From 1974, as the economic situation in New Zealand worsened and unemployment grew, there were raids on the homes of Pacific Islanders in an attempt to find overstayers (people whose permits to stay and work in the country had expired). In this news clip from October 1976 a woman expresses her anguish that police had raided her home late at night when children were asleep. Such actions also often took place in the early morning, and became known as 'dawn raids'.
