Makereti Hinewai

Makereti Hinewai was the matriarch of Ngāti Kaputuhi in the early 20th century and spokesperson for the Maniapoto hapū during Native Land Court investigations into their customary lands. Makereti recalled that she was raised by her grandfather Tipene Te Amohanga, a Ngāti Kaputuhi chief, and her grandmother, Maraea Tiwha of Ngāti Raukawa, who both instructed her in the history and whakapapa of her tribes.
