Members of Ngoi Pēwhairangi's group Te Hokowhitu-a-Tū sing 'Whakarongo'. Pēwhairangi composed this waiata at Pākiriki marae, Tokomaru Bay, in response to a request by Waihoroi Shortland and Selwyn Muru of the television programme Koha. 'Whakarongo', as the narrator notes in Māori, is about language revitalisation and retention. The narrator also observes that this waiata was supported by former head of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori – Māori Language Commission, Tīmoti Kāretu.
